Bernese Mountain Dogs love the ocean

Bernese Mountain Dog at JennerMountain Dogs in Sonoma?

Today was 'that day' when you accept that summer, and yes, even fall is gone. Rain. Cold. Perfect Berner weather but not great spoiled Californian weather. :(

Here is a picture of Homer trailblazing on the Sonoma Coast when the weather was better. Wish that tomorrow could be this day...

Bernese Mountain Dogs like slate floors

Bernese Mountain Dog life
The verdict is in: Bernese Mountain Dogs like slate floors. With their long coats, the cool slate must feel good on a warm day (or on a cold day but my wife has turned the thermostat up to 80!!!). Pictured above is a recent picture of Homer lounging in the kitchen. It's his new favorite spot to plop down and take up space! :)

Bernese Mountain Dog busted!

...and here's a photo from the other night. Picture this: 2:00 AM. Hear a bunch of funny noises in the living room. Go look to see what's going on and KING BERNIE has made himself right at home on the couch. Homer does this too, I think, but I haven't been able to catch him. I think it's a Berner thing to jump up on couches.

Insane in the membrane!

There wasn't a full moon last night, but there was something in the air and our dogs were going bonkers. Bernie kept nipping away upstairs and jumping on the couch and Homer was just generally running in circles. Tonight it's back to normal. I wonder what happened?

Breaking the silence

Homer's belly shot and Bernie

Homer

Okay, I admit, I didn't quite keep up with this 'blogging' thing. Quite frankly, I have no idea how people find the time to write so much? But I guess we'll see how I do this time around. I had one of those almost-mid-life-crisis moments the other night and concluded that blogging might be a nice creative outlet. What a boring solution, right? Shouldn't I be going out and buying a red sports car or something like that?!?

Anyhow, a lot has happened since my last post. The absolute biggest thing is Max, our baby boy born this year. He's still too young to really interact with Bernie and Homer but I'm sure they'll be best friends in a couple of years.

Now, I know everyone is here for Bernie and Homer, so I won't drone on and on about Max (although I can, quite easily in fact), but I will share this interesting story involving Bernie and us getting ready for Max's arrival...

A few months ago, our neighbor showed up with this lifelike electronic baby/doll that's designed to mimic the reactions of a real baby. For example, if you don't support the doll's head, it makes a crying noise and turns red. As we began to practice with this doll, Bernie took a big interest with what was going on. Obsessed is a better description, and it was clear that Bernie wanted this doll. Not good.

While we fretted about how Bernie would behave with the real thing, we set the baby doll down on a bed for just a moment. Being his opportunistic self, Bernie seized our momentary lapse, jumped on the bed, grabbed the doll by the head and took off running! Not good...and let me tell you, we were seriously concerned about this.

Fast forward to now...no issues. Thankfully, Bernie can tell the difference between a doll and the real thing and has been nothing but gentle with Max if not perhaps a tad protective. I think that's just the way Bernese Mountain Dogs are. :)
