Unbeknownst to us, Bernie had been developing tumors on his spleen for several months and one of them finally ruptured while he lay sleeping next to our bed. Thankfully, the death was painless and he showed no symptoms or illness leading up to his death. I'm so glad he didn't suffer as so many dogs do who develop cancer.
Bernie was fantastic with our infant son and I feel sad our boy will never get a chance to know him, or as I had fancifully imagined, ride him around like a pony in our living room!
We miss you boy...

... I am sorry for your loss, Bella, our beloved Berner, is such a critical part of our family, as I look at her stocking hanging on the mantle, so I know how hard it must be to say goodbye...
Godspeed Bernie
So sorry to hear that! Our neighbor lost their Casey last year.. I love to hear them talk about him because they have so many awesome memories.. From your site I can tell Bernie was dearly loved and will surely be miss!!
I just stumbled upon your blog. I had a Bernese Mountain Dog growing up named Rocky. Best dog I have ever had... hands down. I remember the heartbreak I felt when I got the phone call that he passed away. (I was away at college in Florida and my parents were living in upstate NY) I am so sorry for your loss. He will be dearly missed and He was a beautiful boy.
I just stumbled acrsoss your info..was fun to read all about your Berners. I am very sorry to read about Bernie. We have felt that loss as well. It has been a year and half without our DIESEL. My daughter and I just went yesterday and looked at puppies, they are 4 weeks old now,we are hoping to get one in a couple weeks! We live in Indiana and there arent many here at all, I have only seen three other dogs being out, most people do not even know what they are! I have had other breeds and no dog has ever made me smile like my Bernese!
Just came across your blog and love it. I am getting ready to purchase my first Bernese later this year and I couldn't be more excited. You should keep writing!
Do you live in SF? Is your BM dog neutered? We have a lab we want to breed with a BM dog.
Thank you all for the supportive comments. And my own thoughts and best wishes for those of you with your own losses.
I am truly sorry for your dog's passing =/
